Interface Hardware

We supply a range of interfaces that either plug into, or are linked by a cable to your system. This can be either one of our standard Application Boards, or a custom design.

Modules

Ethernet Module - Product Code 5810

Ethernet module 5810
The Ethernet module plugs into the VM-1's 'Module Board' (5811), or your own custom application board, and provides a 10baseT Ethernet connection. The Venom-SC language has networking protocols that support this device.

QVGA Display Driver Module - Product Code 5809

QVGA Driver Module 5809
The QVGA Driver Module provides an interface for many types of QVGA Graphic LCD display and associated touch screens. It can be plugged into the VM-1's 'Module Board' (5811), or your own custom application board. Full software support is provided in Venom's GraphicsLCD object.

QVGA Display/Touchscreen - Product Code 5821

QVGA Display 5821
The Hitachi SP14Q006-ZZA QVGA Graphic LCD has an integrated touchscreen and 5V LED backlighting.

You can design your own circuit to drive this display, but it may be easier to buy the QVGA driver module (above), and maybe also use the 'Module Board' (5811).

The Module board was designed with this display in mind: the display mounts off the back of the board making a very neat and simple assembly.

Note: you may need to arrange a separate 5V supply for the LED backlight, or otherwise arrange that the Module Board 5V regulator isn't overloaded.

Memory Card Interface - Product code 5815

memory card interface

The 5815 memory card interface attaches to the Breakout Board (5805) or Module Board (5811) via a short ribbon cable and 20 pin header (separate kit: 5817) and enables the VM-1 to access filing systems on MMC (Multimedia Card) or SD (Secure Data) memory cards.
It uses either serial port 2 or SPI bus channels, selectable by links on the card.

Memory Card Connector Kit - Product code 5817

Cable and connector kit for the memory card interface, above. Used to attach Memory Card Inteface to Breakout Board (5805) or Module Board (5811).

Cable length: 150mm.
Some soldering necessary.

Industrial I/O

Common Features

The Industrial I/O cards provide an interface between the controller and industrial signal levels. Up to 16 cards may be daisy-chained on to each I2C bus to form a complete system. The cards plug directly into the I2C connector on any standard Application Board.
  • I2C and Long Distance I2C Interfaces
  • I2C cable supplied
  • Fully integrated with Venom language
  • Pluggable screw terminals - 'Combicon'
  • Industry standard signal levels
  • Up to 16 cards can be daisy chained together
  • LED level indicators
  • Isolated input and outputs

Digital Input Card - Product Code 5622

Digital Input Card - Product Code 5622
  • I/O channels: 16 opto-isolated inputs, 2 banks of 8, +ve or -ve polarity
  • I2C bus channels used: 16 of 128* digital
  • Input voltage: 24V dc nom
  • Size 91 x 93mm

I/O Ports

These I/O Ports are intended for prototyping new applications or low volume production. They increase the I/O count of a basic Controller/Application Board combination.

The I/O signal levels are 0 - 5V, not industrial. They are intended for use inside an instrument case. Several ports may be daisy-chained on to each I2C bus to form a complete system.

There is a prototyping area included on each board.

18/12-bit Analogue I/O Port - Product Code 5624

Analogue I/O Port - Product Code 5624
  • 1 channel up to 18-bit differential input
  • 8 channels 12-bit input
  • 2 channels 12-bit output
  • I2C bus
  • Prototyping area - uncommitted array on 2.54mm pitch

This new Analogue I/O Port allows the VM-1 controller to read 8 analogue inputs and generate 2 analogue outputs at 12 bit resolution, and also to read one analogue input at upto 18 bits.

Up to 2 of these Analogue I/O Ports may be connected to each I2C Bus, though in this case the 18-bit signal is not easily usable.

The Analogue I/O Port will plug directly into the I2C connector on the Application Boards.

The kit includes an I2C cable and additional connectors.

Digital I/O Port - Product Code 1022

Digital I/O Port - Product Code 1022

The Digital I/O Port allows the controller to generate and detect 16 digital signals at 5-volt logic levels. Up to 4 of these Digital I/O Ports may be connected to each I2C Bus. With alternative driver chips this can be increased to 8 Ports, a total of 128 digital I/O channels per I2C Bus.

The Digital I/O Port plugs directly into the I2C connector on the Application Boards.

The kit includes an I2C cable.
